The health benefits of Lavender essential oil include its ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems. Lavender oil is extracted mostly from the flowers of the Lavender plant, primarily through steam distillation.

A common recommendation for insomnia is Lavender essential oil. If you apply 1-2 drops of Lavender on your feet just before bedtime you could sleep like a baby. FYI - if you add Lemon onto feet after Lavender you’ll sleep even better.  Lavender helps you go to sleep but Lemon helps keep you asleep.  1-2 drops on a kids pillow can put them out for the night.

Lavender’s calming scent which makes it excellent for anxiety issues. Therefore, it can also be helpful in treating migraines, headaches, depression, nervous tension and emotional stress. The refreshing aroma removes nervous exhaustion and restlessness while also increasing mental activity.

Some common uses for Lavender are: acne, allergies, antihistamine, anxiety, balance the body, bronchitis, bruises, burns, calming, cardiovascular health, cuts, dandruff, earaches, eczema, hay fever, headaches, hives, insect bites, insomnia, laryngitis, leg cramps, lymphatic drainage, increase mental clarity, nausea, neuropathy, psoriasis, rashes, scars, skin irritation, stretch marks, and sunburns  

·       Take the Bite Out of It. Insects, creepies and crawlies are not too fond of the smell of Lavender. In fact, they hate it. If you forget to go the prevention route, Lavender soothes bites, itching and inflammation.

·       The Oatmeal Secret.  Fill a baby food jar with oatmeal, and add 5-8 drops of Lavender oil.  When it’s time to wash your face, add water and it becomes an excellent natural scrub! A little goes a long way.

·       Minor Burns, Major Relief. When you’ve slightly overdone it in the sun, a little Lavender oil is helpful in preventing peeling skin. It aids in your skin’s healing without scarring as well!

·       Boo Boo Relief. Lavender has disinfecting properties. It’s great for the skin, and wonderful for relief from cuts and scrapes, especially if the cut or scrape is located wherever it’s difficult to keep covered.

·       Alleviate Feelings of Earaches.  You can warm Lavender (don’t scald it), mix with olive oil and gently massage around the ears (not in the ears) and near glands in the throat.

·       A Dry Climate Answer. If you suffer from dry, itchy skin, and don’t want to mess around with chemical smelling lotions, add Lavender to fractionated coconut oil and comfort will be yours!

·       Allergies, Sinuses & Congestion Oh My!  Lavender can calm down unruly sinus issues, defiant allergies and other respiratory issues. Just apply on the back of your neck, chest, and between your eyes.

·       Soak Away Stress. Your muscles are tight. Anxiety and deadlines are eating at you. Your heart is racing. Where’s the pressure release valve?  Right here, with Lavender. Add to a warm bath, soak it in, soothe.


"Tech Neck" : Your Child's Posture & Health


Technology devices such as our cell phones and iPads have drastically changed the way we do life. When you walk around a public place you see the majority of people with their devices out, looking down, occasionally looking up to make sure they won’t run into anything. It’s gotten so bad now that what we used to call “nursing home posture” - shoulders rolled forward, chin out, slouching - we now call “junior high posture”. Combine the in-hand devices with the heavy backpacks children wear today and this has a dramatic effect on their posture, which can have a huge impact on their overall, long-term health.


Researchers have studied how this abnormal posture affects overall health and the findings are remarkable. One such study, done in 2014 by the Chief of Spine Surgery at New York Spine Surgery and Rehabilitative Medicine showed that repetitive poor posture, particularly of the head and neck caused severe damage to the structures of the neck - vertebrae, discs, ligaments, and tendons leading to spine surgeries, but also was associated with Low T (testosterone), reduced serotonin (think: depression), and increased cortisol (your body’s main stress hormone). The study was specifically done to provide more information to surgeons who have to surgically reconstruct damaged and degenerated spines, which can be prevented. Some of the highlights of the study were:


The study evaluated the stress using an average head weight of 13.2 lbs. The weight added to the spine dramatically increased when flexing the neck forward to varying degrees.


0° increased weight on the neck by 10 to 12 lbs.

15° increased weight on the neck by 27 lbs.

30° increased weight on the neck by 40 lbs.

45° increased weight on the neck by 49 lbs.

60° increased weight on the neck by 60 lbs.


Loss of the natural curve of the cervical spine leads to incrementally increased stresses on the cervical spine which may lead to early wear, tear, degeneration, and could lead to early surgeries.


Good posture was associated with much more than bad backs or necks. Good posture was linked to higher testosterone, increases in serotonin, decreases in cortisol, and increased feelings of power. Poor posture was associated with the opposite findings.


An average person spends 2-4 hours per day with their head tilted forward for reading and texting on their devices, amassing 700 to 1400 hours of excess, abnormal cervical spine stress per year. It was also noted that a high school student may even spend an extra 5000 hours in poor posture!




The next time you look at a junior high or high-school aged kid, possibly your own, look at the angle of their head looking down and picture 49 lbs of added pressure to their spine and think about them holding that pressure there for 5000 hours (or 208 straight days) - you can imagine how that would have an effect on more than just neck pain!


This is why it’s so important that you get your kids into a chiropractor’s office to be checked and adjusted from birth, regardless of symptoms. Chiropractic care has been proven to be a more effective alternative to medical treatment for symptoms like ear infections, bed-wetting, colic, reflux, digestive issues, but the kids who need it the most are the kids who don’t have any symptoms yet and come and get adjusted regularly for prevention.   1. In a food processor combine almond flour and cacao powder
  2. Pulse in salt and baking soda
  3. Pulse in eggs, coconut oil, honey, and stevia
  4. Briefly pulse in zucchini
  5. Transfer batter to a greased 6.5 x 4 inch medium loaf pan, dusted with almond flour
  6. Bake at 350° for 35-40 minutes
  7. Cool for 2 hours
  8. Serve

Below is the link to the zucchini bread recipe. Honestly, I didn't have vanilla i just added 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract. If you have a hand blender, I would recommend using that instead of a food processor as I found that the food processor did not make the batter smooth enough. 

Tip: make sure the coconut oil is in liquid form first and add a more zucchini than it calls for (this will make it a little bit more moist and MORE VEGGIES!)


I put mine in a glass pie dish so it came out more like a cake and was finished cooking at about 25 min rather than 35-40.



Cool Summer Treat: A Recipe for Tropical or Hawaiian Shave Ice

Looking for a tasty frozen treat that is not only drizzled with delicious fruity goodness and great for these hot summer months but also a much better, healthier alternative? Cool off during these hot summer days by creating a healthier version of shave ice for you and the family!

Shave ice is primarily made with fine shavings of ice and a variety of fruit syrups. Unfortunately, these syrups usually contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, unnatural food dyes in every color of the rainbow, and other chemicals and additives. Not very cool if you're wanting to make healthier choices and stay clear of those things. But not to fear! You can easily make your own fruit syrups right at home without all the harmful ingredients! It’s always great when you know exactly what’s in the food you and your family eat! Even better when it still tastes amazing, if not yummier, than its unhealthier counterparts.



·       Ice

·       Frozen fruit concentrate of any flavor

·       And/or homemade fruit sauce


You'll also need:

·       Blender or snow cone/shave ice machine

·       Cups or snow cone cups

·       Straws and spoons

What to do:

First you'll need the syrups! Here is an easy no cook fruit syrup recipe you can use to make them. This recipe in particular needs 24 hours for it to fully be done so if you want something quicker you can always simmer or heat the fruit syrup. Otherwise, you can just prepare it a day beforehand.


- This recipe is easy enough. You basically just combine all your ingredients in a mason jar, mash it all up, strain it out after 24-48 hours of letting it sit and refrigerate, and Voila! You have a yummy fruit syrup to pour over your shave ice!

- There are 8 flavor combinations shown, but feel free to experiment and come up with flavors of your very own! And since this is a no cook fruit syrup recipe, all the nutrients are left intact. Leaving you with not only a scrumptious fruity syrup, but one that benefits you as well!

- Next it’s time to turn ice into snow for your homemade syrup to be poured over! You can either do this with a Vitamix, Blendtec, or if you just so happen to have a snow cone or shave ice machine lying around, it’s time to put it to good use! Just follow instructions for crushing or shaving ice when using any of these.

- Since we are blessed to have a Vitamix, this is what our family does to attain shaved/crushed ice.

- First we put the ice cubes into the blender mug adding enough water until ice is floating and not touching the blades, blend that for a couple of seconds. After this is complete strain out the excess water and there you have the “snow” for your shave ice!

- Now all you need to do is assemble! Scoop some snow into your cups. Use an ice cream scoop to round off the top if you so desire. Pour your scrumptious homemade fruit syrup over the top of the shave ice, put a straw in it so you can drink up some of the melted juices at the bottom, and you’re done!


Get Creative!! Make Something Yummy Even More Delicious:

- Mix it up a little and add more than one flavor of syrup to your frozen treat. Make a rainbow shave ice with three or more flavors! You can even place a scoop of ice cream in the cup before adding the “snow” such as a vanilla or any other flavor you may enjoy! Another option is to make your own homemade ice cream and use that! (Tip: The brand Cuisinart sells an ice cream maker that is extremely affordable, it allows you to make ice cream in as little as 20 mins. I bought mine at my local Costco between $30-$40.)

- Traditionally in some parts, shave ice is topped off with sweetened condensed milk. A great alternative to what is called a “snow cap” would be to drizzle some delicious coconut cream sweetened with stevia or any other sweetener of your choice. This will give your tasty summer treat an authentic Tropical FLA-VAH! Your possibilities are endless, there are so many options depending on how creative you want to get!


I think you would have to agree, this would be an awesome way to cool off this summer with an icy treat you and your family will love! It can even be a fun little project to do with the young ones! A healthier alternative that tastes absolutely AMA-ZING!!     





Does My Insurance Cover That?



As a healthcare provider, one of the most common questions we get in the community and in the office is “Does my insurance cover that?” It’s a valid question, but I urge you (as always), to CHANGE YOUR THINKING!


Americans have been trained to expect the little pieces of plastic or paper in their wallets called insurance cards to pay for their healthcare, so we don’t use any health care that’s not in the traditional medical/insurance model. The problem is that insurance doesn’t pay for health at all- it pays for “disease management” or “sick care”. It’s so backwards. The modern healthcare system is so flawed that you must first lose your health to even enter it!


According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, premiums have risen 87 percent in the past six years to an average of $11,480 per year for a family, which is almost what a minimum wage worker earns annually. In the meantime, NBC News ran an article recently in which the U.S. ranked dead last in overall health yet again. We are 51st in the world in life expectancy, yet we spend more money on “healthcare” than any other country in the world. Why are we getting such bad results? We have too much reliance on the failing medical and insurance “sick-care” system.


Let me explain why you should never want to use your insurance. Insurance covers “medically necessary” care. That sounds reasonable until you read the definition of “medically necessary”.


According to the Medicare Guidelines, Section 2251.3:


“A treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life; or therapy that is performed to maintain or prevent deterioration of a chronic condition is deemed not medically necessary.”


That is exactly the opposite of the purpose of Align Utah. We exist TO prevent disease, TO promote health, and TO prolong and enhance the quality of life. Our chiropractic treatments are specifically designed to maintain health and prevent deterioration of a chronic condition- subluxation. Our nutrition and detox programs are designed specifically to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong and enhance the quality of life. We are the opposite of what insurance covers, and when you read that statement it begs the question: “WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT THAT?!?”


Auto Insurance doesn’t cover oil changes. It doesn’t cover tire rotations. It doesn’t cover brake pads. It doesn’t cover anything that promotes the health of your car, or even anything to prevent deterioration.


IT’S THERE FOR WHEN YOU GET IN A WRECK. Health insurance is the same thing. If I get in a auto accident, thank God for the medical system to save my life and thank God for insurance so that I don’t get stuck with a $50,000 bill.


The sooner that we realize that OUR health is OUR responsibility and not Blue Cross’s, not Aetna’s, not Medicare’s, not Obama’s or Trump’s or Hillary’s – the sooner you can take control of your health and direct its destiny.

Flame Retardants In Your Nursery?!?

Scientists from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and Duke University recently released a groundbreaking study that found a biomarker of the cancer-causing TDCIPP in the bodies of all 22 mothers and 26 children tested.


TDCIPP, a known carcinogen, and other hazardous fire retardants are commonly found in furniture, nap mats, changing table pads, nursing pillows, and other consumer products. Compared to their mothers, the children’s levels tested nearly five times higher, and in the most extreme case a child had 23 times the levels measured in the mother!


This is not a new problem with flame-retardants. In fact, in the 1970’s research published in the journal Science showed us that children who wore pajamas treated with flame-retardants had a mutagenic metabolite in their urine that children who wore non-treated pajamas did not have. In 1977 The Consumer Product Safety Commission even banned certain flame-retardants from children’s clothing after a National Cancer Institute study showed that it caused tumors in laboratory animals, and there is now clear evidence that TDCIPP causes tumors in animals in multiple organs.


Most parents would be appalled by someone sitting and smoking cigarettes next to their child, but would never even consider that the couch or the pillow the child lies on for 8-10 hours per day is having the exact same carcinogenic effect. This is because everybody knows cigarette smoke is toxic. What we DON’T know see are all of the other major sources of toxicity that our children are being exposed to –furniture, cleaners, bedding, plastic toys, GMOs, tap water, glyphosate, vaccines, food additives, etc. Combine all of these toxins and you get a health epidemic like we are seeing developing right now, and it’s starting in our children.



Detox is not just for adults, it’s for everyone. The bucket begins filling in utero, that’s been proven through many studies. When do you start emptying the bucket? As soon as you can and as often as you can. Our girls have detoxed since they were born. They sleep with an air purifier, eat a whole foods diet, eat fermented foods and take probiotics, and even love taking CytoDetox which binds and eliminates the most dangerous of toxins. This isn’t to say they are guaranteed to be toxin-free, it’s just one step my wife and I have decided to take for the well-being of our children, and we recommend the same to everyone.







Migraines - Too Common, Too Debilitating - Natural Solutions That Work



Ask anybody who has ever experienced it and they will tell you that a migraine is more than just a headache. Migraines are an incredibly prevalent debilitating neurological phenomenon which regularly affect more than 38 million people in the U.S. alone and over 1 billion worldwide. I have seen hundreds of various headache sufferers in my practice - from children with vomiting migraines since they were 2 years old, to adults who are miserable but “have learned to just live with it”, to those who must get into bed, hide under their blanket, cover their ears and eyes, and tell their kids that this is “leave mommy alone time”. One of the most frustrating things about seeing migraine patients is their lack of hope. Oftentimes they have seen a practitioner years ago that told them it is genetic and there is nothing that can be done except take medication when you feel a migraine coming on. Even then, most of the time, they have given up on the drugs even working. If you are reading this article, you either currently suffer from migraines or you know someone close to you who does. Fortunately, there is often a solution. Unfortunately, we are often “the last resort”.


Migraine Facts:


  • Migraine is an extremely incapacitating collection of neurological symptoms often accompanied by:

    • Visual disturbances - including an “aura” which occurs in about 25% of sufferers

    • Nausea, Vomiting

    • Dizziness, Vertigo, inability to visually focus

    • Extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch, smell

  • Migraine is the 3rd most prevalent illness in the world

  • Migraine is the 6th most disabling illness in the world

  • More than 90% of sufferers are unable to work or function normally during a migraine

  • Every 10 seconds someone goes to the ER complaining of severe headache

The worst thing about migraines is the strange combination of:


1) the incredible impact on the individual’s health - hiding in bed or under your cubicle in silence is no way to live your life;

2) the incredible impact on our country financially with healthcare service costs involved but more important the workforce disability costs; and

3) the lack of any successful or reliable answer for a cause OR solution from the medical field.



Migraines and (headaches in general) are always very different from person to person, and this makes “diagnosing” them correctly very difficult. They can’t be measured, they are often hard to describe, and they can be completely different each time. Brain scans are incredibly expensive and don’t give many answers, nor do MRIs or CT scans. Headaches and migraines are like a puzzle; different pieces will fit in different places and help complete the puzzle. Some puzzles are harder to solve than others. Often the smallest things can make huge improvements. Because headaches and migraines are so variable it is impossible to say for sure that any given solution will help you, but we have seen amazing results with headaches and migraines in our office (look at our testimonial page it’s full of migraine and headache stories!) through our integrative approach looking at three key areas of the wellness puzzle - nutrition, detoxification and cellular healing, and chiropractic.





Most (if not all) modern health conditions have a nutritional component, and headaches and migraines are no exception. Looking at the relationship from a big picture view, your nutrition largely controls your level of inflammation. Think about the last headache you had - you could probably feel the inflammation and pressure inside your skull. This isn’t to say that migraines are exclusively an “inflammation problem”, but inflammation is not going to help and it’s a great place to start. Decreasing inflammation is key with headaches and migraines. A good place to start is by increasing your omega-3 fats with salmon or fish oil and using anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric. These directly affect inflammatory pathways and instantly down-regulate inflammation. This is very general advice, and I’m not saying you should go out and take the first fish oil you find and take it forever. Everybody is different and it is very hard to know how much omega-3 your body needs without the proper testing. Although it’s possible to create a great nutrition plan without testing, I like to get basic inflammatory markers initially to see if overall inflammation is a problem. If it is, it needs to be addressed immediately!


Food Sensitivities

If you google which foods can trigger a migraine, it would be much simpler to make a list of which foods DO NOT trigger migraine. It’s almost everything. Some of the bigger culprits include:



    Alcohol - especially red wine



    Food Additives - Nitrites/Nitrates, Aspartame, MSG

    Pickled or Fermented Foods


If you think your migraines are food-related, an elimination diet can be very helpful because you will find obvious triggers and avoid them. It can also be very frustrating, because for many people it takes months of discovering different triggers, eliminating them, experimenting, then finding the next trigger, eliminating a trigger and the headache still comes. Sometimes your trigger may not be the food itself but may be a component of the food - natural or added. Begin by eating a Real Food diet. This means no additives, no chemicals, no MSG, aspartame, sucralose, food dyes, hydrogenated oils. These changes alone can decrease headache and migraine intensity and frequency dramatically! After implementing a Real Food diet, I recommend taking a detailed food diary and noting any trends. Food sensitivities don’t always show up immediately, so look at everything you did the day of a migraine and the day(s) before - foods you’ve eaten, personal care products used, emotional stress level, exercise performed, how you slept the night(s) before. I’ve had patients notice they trigger migraines after running 7 miles, but not if they run 6 miles. A headache or migraine diary is a good idea whether or not you are going to do lab testing!


The easiest way to find food sensitivities is to use a lab to test your body’s immune reactivity to all foods at once. At Align Utah we use Cyrex labs, the world’s leader in autoimmune reactivity testing.  Cyrex tests over 180 different food allergens including the foods themselves raw AND cooked but also some more obscure allergens like spices, herbs, gums, lectins, meat glues, and food colorings. The testing is (quite frankly) more expensive than other sensitivity tests I’ve seen, but much more comprehensive. You should make your decision based on how severe your migraines are and how sick you are of suffering with them. Many migraine victims find solutions without testing. However, I have witnessed that people are often to the point where they are frustrated enough with the lack of answers that they are ready for the best testing to find a solution. This doesn’t mean we ever find a one and only answer, but it can be a big piece of the puzzle and a great place to start.


Detoxification and Cellular Healing


Toxins can be another huge trigger for migraines. Many acute exposures cause immediate symptoms - the most obvious being chemicals in personal care products, especially perfumes, or cleaning products. Chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and BPA are added to your personal care products, fluoride and chlorine are added to your water, and MSG, aspartame, and hydrogenated oils are added to your foods. If you understand the toxic bucket analogy, you understand how toxins trigger migraines - one more drop in the toxic bucket causes it to overflow! Many migraine sufferers have experienced a toxin-induced migraine - from a cologne or perfume, a cleaning product, an inversion or other pollution. Avoiding these toxins is key. Change out your personal care products (we use two companies called Abba’s Set Apart Remedies (local) and Pure Haven Essentials), filter your air, filter your water, & eat real food. This is the first and most important place to start, but then you must remove any toxins that are stored in your body, and lastly, fix the damage the toxins have caused to your cells. Toxins create cellular inflammation which decreases the body’s natural ability to detoxify, decreases hormone sensitivity leading to weight gain and other hormone imbalances, and destroy your body’s ability to produce enough energy leading to fatigue and brain fog. Chiropractic has always helped greatly with migraines. Unfortunately not enough people know about the benefits which often end up being the “last resort” that actually works. For a long time chiropractic care was the only approach we used in our office, and many people got well. If there was one thing I would suggest for a loved one suffering from migraines, it would be “go see a chiropractor.” In fact, several clinical trials show that chiropractic improves migraine headaches. In one study of people with migraines, 22% of those who received chiropractic manipulation reported more than a 90% reduction of attacks. Also, 49% reported a significant reduction of the intensity of each migraine. But how does chiropractic help with migraines??


Your spine is made up of hundreds of joints that all work together to hold you upright and allow you to move. This bony column is the foundation for all your limbs and muscles to attach to. Think of your spine like a chain on a bike. A chain has 2 joints per link and all of the joints need to be working in unison for proper chain motion. If one joint is dysfunctional or stuck, it affects the chain’s overall function and thus the bike’s overall function. This is a very basic explanation of chiropractic. If one spinal joint is dysfunctional, “locked up”, or subluxated, it decreases proprioception or messages coming from the joint to the brain, which (among other neurological consequences) increases pain signals from that joint. This is the basis for how joint dysfunction of the spine can create pain signals!


This vertebral subluxation, or spinal joint dysfunction can cause joint pain, neck pain, or tension headaches, decreased range of motion, muscle spasms...but remember how I said that migraines are a neurological phenomenon? So does that mean the spine affects neurological function? Your spinal column and your nervous system are intricately connected, and proper spinal joint alignment and biomechanics are necessary for proper neurological function. In other words, yes, damage to the spine can cause neurological issues and imbalances which lead to health problems when not correctly addressed.


Each individual is different, but in a patient suffering with migraines, I often see damage in two spinal areas upon examination and x-ray - the upper cervical area AND/OR the lower cervical or upper thoracic area (top of the neck and bottom of the neck). Both of these areas are commonly damaged with whiplash injuries. The upper cervical area includes the skull or occiput (surrounds the brain) and the first (C1 or atlas) and second (C2 or axis) cervical vertebra. This area has one of the highest concentrations of ‘proprioceptors’ in the body. Proprioceptors send signals to your brain telling it where your body parts are located and what they are doing. The proprioceptors in the neck are responsible for the important tasks of keeping your eyes level at all times while being able to move your head around and still see. If your head moves too fast you get dizzy because those signals go haywire. If you think about it, these are incredibly complex coordinated actions. The upper cervical spine structures surround and protect the lower brainstem, which controls many bodily functions that we have no conscious control over like your heartbeat, respiration, digestion, cranial nerve function and special senses. Any abnormality in the upper cervical area can greatly affect neurological function. Ear infections, sinus issues, vertigo, migraines - these are all issues commonly associated with upper cervical subluxation.


The other area often associated with migraines is the upper thoracic region, specifically the T1 and T2 nerve roots. Your sympathetic nervous system neurologically controls blood flow by directing blood vessel dilation and constriction, or opening and closing. Sympathetic nerve control begins in the thoracic region, with innervation from T1 and T2 (think right below your tee shirt’s neckline) controlling blood flow to the head. Any irritation or interference to the spine and nervous system at T1 or T2 could affect neurological control of blood vessel dilation or constriction in the head, leading to migraine headache.

A Good Old Camp Fire Treat Receives a Makeover:

 We are presently in the midst of summer. Many of us are taking an opportunity to spend more time outdoors. Admiring and appreciating the gorgeous and scenic landscapes of the great outdoors, enjoying the weather and beautiful sun-shiny days. In our family, summers are centered around camping. It’s one of the fun activities that our family looks forward to and takes a great deal of pleasure in. Some of the most memorable moments we can remember have been spent camping in nature. Sitting around a campfire, enjoying each other’s company, talking stories, having a laugh, and of course savoring a gooey sweet treat. For some, camping just wouldn’t be the same without the experience of roasting marshmallows by the fire, and sandwiching it between two crispy graham crackers dripping with chocolatey goodness! That was the main reason I went out searching for a heathier alternative to S’mores. Also for those in my family who choose to eat real food rather than manmade foods! More than anything I wanted my youngest daughter to be able to have the campfire S’more experience and not feel excluded from the festivities! I want to instill in her “real food” eating practices and principles, so she doesn’t have to sacrifice her health in the long run and still have the opportunity to eat delicious and amazing food!



Grain Free Graham Crackers

NOTE: These are best when allowed to cool about 30 minutes. Reminder: these are made with coconut flour and won’t be as crisp as you might find with almond flour or even grains. But they were a nice alternative!



  • 1/2 cup pastured butter, softened
  • 1 whole free range egg
  • 1/4 cup raw honey or stevia (or sweetener of choice)
  • 2 tsp blackstrap molasses
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 – 1 cup coconut flour
  • 1/3 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp aluminum-free baking powder
  • 3 tsp cinnamon (more or less depending on your preference)
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt


In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients using only 3/4 cup of the coconut flour.
In a mixing bowl, blend together the softened butter, honey, vanilla and molasses. Add the egg and beat until incorporated into a soft batter.
Add in half of the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Then slowly add in the other half. If the dough is still wet and batter-like, then add more coconut flour, a tablespoon at a time. The dough should come together into a ball. When it does, you are done and can stop adding coconut flour. I used 3/4 cup and then added 2 more tablespoons.

Remove your ball of dough and cut it in half. Place each on a piece of wax paper. The dough can now be refrigerated overnight if you plan on making the crackers another time.

When you are ready to use the dough, remove from the fridge and bring to room temperature.
Place silicone baking sheet or wax paper on your counter and place one of the dough discs on top. Then place a piece of wax paper or plastic wrap sheet on top of the ball, roll out with a rolling pin until the dough is 1/4 inch thick. This method will allow you to simply place the silicone sheet or wax paper on your cookie sheet to bake.

Use a pizza cutter to draw lines on the dough about 2 inches apart. Use a fork to prick small holes in the dough. This will give it the authentic graham cracker look and feel and also help you separate the crackers when they are done baking.

Bake at 300-325 degrees F for 12-18 minutes (time may vary depending on oven). Check crackers periodically to ensure they don’t burn and to adjust for cooking time. The crackers will still be soft when you remove them from the oven but brown at the edges (allow crackers to cool down a bit on cookie sheet before removing to cooling rack).  When they cool they will harden and be firm up.

Once cooled, break apart and store in an airtight container for about a week or so.



Heathier Homemade Marshmallow Recipe

Note: Besides the non-food toxic ingredients in regular store bought marshmallows there’s another ingredient that’s also found in them that most people aren’t aware of. The gelatin that is used in the majority of processed foods, including marshmallows, is derived from “PIG” meaning it’s a pork product. So if your trying your best to stay away from eating pork because of its uncleanliness, scan through labels and try not to purchase food products with gelatin unless it specifically states it’s from a bovine source and even more importantly that it’s a grass-fed gelatin (if that’s important to you).



  • 8×8 pan for large marshmallow squares or 9×13 pan for smaller marshmallow square
  • parchment paper
  • hand mixer or stand mixer
  • candy thermometer
  • mixing bowl




  • 3 Tbsp. grass fed beef gelatin
  • 1 cup filtered water, split in half (Option: as an alternative to plain water, tea can also be used here to add a specific herbal flavor, such as green tea or peppermint tea etc…)
  • 1 cup maple syrup or honey, or half of each
  • 1/4 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract (optionally you can use 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp. another extract for flavoring. Peppermint, chocolate, almond, orange, lemon, etc. are all great options)
  • arrowroot powder, cocoa powder, cinnamon, toasted coconut flakes, etc. for dusting the finished marshmallows (optional – you can leave the marshmallows plain too, you do not have to dust them)




  1. Either grease your pan (8×8 for large marshmallow squares or a 9×13 for smaller marshmallow squares) or line it both ways with parchment paper. If using parchment paper, you can easily remove the marshmallows from the pan using the “handles” that the parchment paper makes. If coating the marshmallows, spread a thin layer evenly in the bottom of the pan.
  2. In your mixing bowl pour in 1/2 cup water and whisk in the gelatin, set aside to let the gelatin bloom.
  3. In a medium saucepan combine the other 1/2 cup water, maple syrup and/or honey, and salt.
  4. Heat over medium to medium high heat, bringing to a boil. Using your candy thermometer, let the mixture boil until it reaches 240 degrees, or soft ball stage. Remove from heat. (If not removed in time, and the mixture gets too hot, your marshmallows might not fluff up and will be denser)
  5. Using either a hand mixer or a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, turn it on low at first, breaking up the bloomed gelatin. Very SLOWLY pour the syrup/honey mixture into the gelatin mixture, while slowly turning up the speed on your mixer to high.
  6. Allow mixture to whip on high for 5-10 minutes (this is where it’s nice to have a stand mixer) until a thick marshmallow whipped cream is produced.
  7. Transfer the marshmallow whip to your prepared pan and smooth down with the back of your spoon. If using a coating, sprinkle on top of the marshmallows and pat down. If you are not using a coating, grease your hands, to prevent sticking, and pat down smooth. You can alternately use a piece of parchment paper on top to smooth out the marshmallow, and leave it on top to cover it while it is setting.
  8. Leave your marshmallows out uncovered to set (not in your fridge, that will create moisture which will destroy the marshmallow) for 6-8 hours or even better overnight (in my experience leaving overnight to air dry is best!).
  9. Using a knife, cut marshmallows in long strips, and then into squares from there. Dust marshmallows, on all sides, in your powder of choice, or leave natural without any dusting.
  10. Store marshmallows up to a week on your counter top in a sealed container. You can leave them out open to dry even longer. The longer you let them dry the better for toasting over a fire!

NOTE: You can use the fluffy whip to frost cupcakes, rather than putting it into the 8×8 pan. The Fluffy whip stage would also be the stage to add your organic rice krispies when making rice krispee treats, rather than melting the marshmallows for them. Fibromyalgia - Is It Really Incurable?




Fibromyalgia is a tough thing to see in a chiropractic office, even though that’s right where the person needs to be. Sometimes a patient is in so much pain it’s hard to touch them for an exam let alone adjust their spine. They are usually skeptical, and rightfully so. Often times they have been told by friends, family, and even doctors that their problems are “all in their head”. Many times they say things like “I hurt from the top of my head to the tips of my toes”, “I feel like I got hit by a Mack truck”, or “My arms and legs feel like they are stuck in cement”. My least favorite is “I really love to exercise and I can’t do anything with my kids anymore because I’m in too much pain all over. Please help me be able to exercise.” It’s terribly debilitating and can take a person’s hope away.



Fortunately for the millions of suffering Americans this disease IS reversible, although a Google search or an outdated textbook (or medical doctor) might tell you otherwise. I can confidently tell you this because I have personally helped many people not just limit their flare-ups to virtually non-existent but actually reverse their Fibromyalgia diagnosis to merely a memory in their medical charts (listen to our podcast accompanying this article, I interview one of these patients).


We don’t “treat” fibromyalgia (or any disease for that matter), but by understanding some of the basic designs and functions of the body and working with a qualified doctor and team, you can begin to understand more about your potential solutions. When used together they remove any possible interference from your body healing and are the secret to you getting your life back.




Fibromyalgia literally translates to muscle pain, or pain in the ligaments, tendons, and joints. It’s characterized by unexplained pain all over the body which can vary in intensity, and is diagnosed by that too - pain all over the body in 11 out of 18 pain spots. It’s one of the worst conditions to suffer from and one of the worst diagnoses to receive because it gives no real answers - you have pain all over you body. Medical doctors have no answers at all outside of switching medications from Lyrica to gabapentin to prednisone to muscle relaxers and back again in a search to relieve your pain but never finding a true cause. Fibromyalgia is much more than just pain too, it is usually accompanied by chronic fatigue, brain fog, troubled sleep, and an inability to recover from normal physical exertion. Over 10 million Americans suffer with fibro, and it affects 4x more women than men.


Although very misunderstood and mysterious, fibromyalgia is classified as a “heightened pain state”. It’s described as “overactive nerves”. Your body produces and interprets more pain signals than it should considering the given pain stimulus, often times with no painful stimulus at all. In other words, if a 1lb weight was dropped on your normal healthy arm and you said it was a 2/10 on a 1-10 pain scale, a fibromyalgia patient would rate it a 12/10 and three days later it might still be a 5/10. The touch of a small pet’s paw might make them jump off the couch. Picking up a granddaughter might lead to 2 days of bedrest. Debilitating pain - burning, aching, stabbing, shooting.


Fibro is classified as a Centralized Pain State, meaning the abnormal pain perception is occurring in the Central Nervous System, or brain and spinal cord, even though the pain is felt throughout the arms and legs. Many hypotheses exist regarding cause and cure including theories on brain and pain neurotransmitters, inflammatory cytokines, sleep disturbances, circadian rhythm of cortisol, oxidative damage, etc etc...and it’s a big (and growing) part of the pharmaceutical drug industry’s research and marketing. As always though, there is no one single cause, and there is no one single solution (like a drug or pill or shot).



The Real Health 3-Part Solution for Fibromyalgia


Nutrition - It Starts With Food


Good health starts with real food. It’s hard to heal while eating junk. But will nutrition reverse fibromyalgia? I would argue that while you can’t heal without proper nutrition, you won’t fully heal from diet alone, but it’s the most important place to start. You can’t extinguish a fire and fuel it at the same time. The goal of eating for fibromyalgia is DECREASING INFLAMMATION. Many “diets” have had great success because the one thing they all have in common is they (typically) avoid fake food and encourage real foods including vegetables. That’s a great place to start! It’s an absolute MUST for anyone suffering from fibromyalgia to avoid inflammatory foods and follow a strict anti-inflammatory diet. Eating processed or sugary junk foods is like pouring gas on the fire, and that kind of self-sabotage deserves no sympathy. As I’ve heard many patients tell me - “No food tastes as good as NOT having fibro flare-ups feels.”


I recommend a ‘plant-based paleo’ diet rich in a large variety of vegetables, high-fat foods like coconut products and avocados, grass-fed beef and butter, organic chicken and eggs, wild-caught fish, nuts, and seeds with very little sugar, little to no grains (no bread, pasta, rice, corn) and absolutely no processed or genetically modified (GMO) foods. I also like to incorporate different healing techniques taught originally by Dr. Pompa called Diet Variation to challenge metabolism and down-regulate cellular inflammation faster. Once you are eating a healthy diet you can then begin to “supplement” additional things (like cyclic doses of probiotics, omegas, L-Carnitine, etc etc - work with a physician!) that can also help decrease inflammation, but not until your diet is right. When these techniques are combined with detoxification and chiropractic it’s magic!


True Cellular Detox - You Have to Fix the Cell to get Well!


Detox is the wrong word to use for what we do in our office and what you need to do to really truly get healthy. People think of detox as a 10-Day Detox package from their local health food store or a Liver and Gut Cleanse they read about on Pinterest. While all of those things can be helpful, they aren’t going to solve the problem of fibromyalgia. You have to fix the cell to get well. What that means is that when your cells are functioning properly, your body is functioning properly and you don’t have pain or symptoms. Many symptoms of fibromyalgia are linked to toxicity and the problems caused at the cellular level including low energy or chronic fatigue, brain fog, and abnormal sleep cycles. A critical part of our True Cellular Detox program we offer is getting your cells functioning properly again - decreasing cellular inflammation, repairing the cell membrane, restoring cellular energy,  re-establishing an important cellular process called methylation. Fibromyalgia has been linked to toxicity from many sources including excitotoxins from food like MSG and aspartame, glyphosate (round-up), Volatile Organic Compounds (fumes), heavy metals, and more. These toxins create cellular inflammation and without effectively getting rid of the toxins, you will never eliminate the inflammation and never truly get well.


Chiropractic - The Missing Piece of the Puzzle


It doesn’t make sense to me. 10 million people in our country have a debilitating disease causing pain all over the body and horrible suffering. The medical system is of little-to-no help outside of dangerous medications. All they know is that it’s a problem with the central nervous system interpreting sensory information improperly and creating a heightened pain state. It begs the question - WHY AREN’T MORE FIBRO PATIENTS GETTING THEIR SPINE & NERVOUS SYSTEM CHECKED AND ADJUSTED BY A CHIROPRACTOR REGULARLY? The answer is because people have huge misconceptions about what chiropractic is and what it does.


Your spine is an incredibly complex combination of bones, muscles, ligaments, joints, and not the least - the nervous system. The spinal column surrounds and protects the central nervous system and the beginning of the peripheral nervous system, the sensitive nerve roots. Each bone or vertebra of the spine has at least 6 joints associated with it, and there are 24 moveable segments. When the spine is subluxated, or a specific vertebra or group or vertebrae has restricted motion, this decreases what’s called proprioception or mechanoreception at that joint or in that given area. Decreased mechanoreception at any joint (knee, hip, shoulder, spine) has negative neurological effects on the nociceptive or pain pathways, and this leads to a cascade of neurological and eventual endocrinological consequences including an increased stress response. This is often accompanied by other physiological features such as muscle spasms and local inflammation, eventually leading to fibrosis and degeneration, adding further insult to injury and causing more and more deleterious results. This in turn affects generated pain signals in many different ways and even affects the way the brain interprets these pain signals. In the clinic we often see the most spinal damage in the lower cervical and upper thoracic area (lower neck, shoulders, upper back), and that’s no surprise. Research shows that fibromyalgia patients show the same spinal cord hypersensitivity seen in a recent whiplash injury.3 The more scary fact is that these ‘altered nociceptive signals’ are often sub-cortical, meaning you don’t consciously feel the pain although neurologically the root cause is still happening just the same and affecting your health on every level. This is the basis for the chiropractic adjustment! When combined with certain techniques like intermittent compressive/extensive traction and physical therapy exercises we can decrease subluxation, improve abnormal joint patterns, remove neurological interference and improve fibromyalgia symptoms. Spinal alignment and segmental motion is an absolute must for everyone but especially fibromyalgia sufferers.


What Do You Do Now?


Many people will try to do this on their own, and for 99% of people - you just can’t. You can do a lot, but you really need a coach and a partner, and you literally have to have a chiropractor to get adjusted. No stretching or massage or yoga will take it’s place. What if there was ONE THING you could do that was easy, would cost you nothing, and has been proven that it would slow down the aging process?


What if that one thing would also drastically help with your weight-loss, your hormone balance, help you decrease your chances of diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer- would you do it?




Among all the well-known negative effects of sugar, perhaps the biggest and most important one is called glycation, which makes you A.G.E., or get old faster.

Advanced Glycation End-products, or A.G.E.s, are compounds made when sugar molecules bind to proteins. It is through this glycation process that sugar can lead to:


-Cardiovascular disease

-Alzheimer’s disease

-Arthritis or Degenerative Disc Disease

-Diabetes, etc


Glycation is synonymous with aging, as it leads to loss of tissue elasticity (think: wrinkles). It has also been shown that glycation is a major reason for other degenerative changes in the body including Degenerative Disc Disease of the spine. Through this process of glycation we create inflammation in the body, which can activate the immune system. The immune system then has to work to neutralize the A.G.E.s, and even though this is a healing process, it can cause quite a bit of damage. For example, inside your arteries the scar tissue created by this process is called ‘plaque’ and it is a major component of heart disease.



Because sugar fuels glycation, it is imperative that you GET OFF SUGAR, but

especially fructose! Fructose, otherwise known as fruit sugar, ‘glycates’ at a higher rate than sucrose or other sugars (at least 10x the glycation rate!).1 Because of this reason it is incredibly important to minimize your total sugar intake, but especially fructose. Many experts recommend staying below 25 grams of total fructose/day, but I would even go so far as to say it should never exceed 20 grams. Fructose not only leads to increased AGEs, but also is more work for the liver (leading to a fatty liver), increases bad (VLDL) cholesterol and triglycerides, and leads to more rapid weight gain than almost anything on the planet, including table sugar. Anybody who tells you that all sugar is created equal is behind the times on the science!


If you want to slow down the aging and degenerating process, make sure that you are actively decreasing your sugar intake, especially fructose. Change your mindset, read your labels, change your tastebuds, and if you have to, find a good substitute to use in place of sugar.

Oil Pulling: Why You Should Consider It

Oil pulling or oil swishing is an ancient detoxing practice that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Originating in India, this method of detoxing is done by taking 1 tablespoon or so of organic cold pressed oil and swishing it in your mouth, as you would a mouth wash, for 10-20 minutes (making sure not to swallow it) and then disposing of it by spitting it out. Rinse mouth out with warm water to get rid of any remaining residue. It is recommended to do this in the morning before eating or even brushing your teeth, but you can choose to do it anytime of the day really.


What oils should you use for oil pulling?

Well, first off, whatever oil you choose to utilize, you want to make sure that its organic and cold pressed. You don’t want to be using oils that have chemicals and/or pesticides in them because that basically defeats the whole purpose of oil pulling in the first place. Sesame seed oil is deemed one of the best oils to use for oil pulling. This is probably due to the origins of oil pulling itself and how this oil is readily available in India and used for a multitude of things. It also contains many antioxidants but realistically oil pulling with sesame seed oil would be very expensive to keep up with on a daily basis. This is why you can also use other oils such as organic extra virgin cold pressed coconut, sunflower, and olive oil as they also contain a variety of antioxidants.


So how do you do it and exactly how will it benefit me?

Of course you would want to know that or why bother even going through the trouble right? Well, when you first put the oil in your mouth and start swishing it mixes with your saliva, turning it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in those oils start to draw out toxins found in the saliva. As you swish around the mouth, teeth, gums, and tongue, the oil will continue “pulling” and absorbing toxins. In turn, this will progressively change the consistency of the liquid making it thicker and whiter. When this consistency is reached, it is to be spit out to avoid any reabsorption of the toxins in the body. Again, make sure you spit it out and whatever you do be careful not swallow any of it! There is an assortment of bacteria, toxins, and other residue up in there and you wouldn’t want to reabsorb any on that nastiness!

Tip: I recommend spitting this liquid out in the trash instead of the toilet or sink to avoid plumbing problems. But if you do decide to be a rebellious and spit it out into the sink, I suggest spitting it out directly into the drain while running hot water down the drain to be safe.

As far as what it does, oil pulling detoxifies the oral cavity in the same way soap cleans dirty dishes. Plant based fats are an emulsifier by nature. It cleans the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth, creating an antiseptic oral environment that can help with the appropriate flow of dental liquid needed to prevent cavities and disease.

Of course, it is something that is meant to be done on a consistent basis, as most everything is anyway, in order to see noticeable changes. Some even report seeing major differences in one week. Who knows, you may even end up incorporating this method into your daily life. If you use a mouth wash, you can even switch to oil pulling for a holistic solution to kill bacteria and bad breath since many mouthwashes that aren’t natural contain chemicals that are harmful to the body. Essential oils like peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon, tea tree, or clove can also be added to the oil for their medicinal properties they carry. They provide awesome flavor that will add to your whole experience as well! Oil pulling, along with a healthy lifestyle in general, will be beneficial to your life and overall health for sure. I hope you would agree; this is certainly something you may want to consider implementing into your daily routine!

Ingredients you will need:

1/2 cup coconut oil

20-30 drops of therapeutic grade essential oil (peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon, clove, tea tree oils etc.- check with a doc or midwife if you are pregnant, nursing, or before using on children)



1.      Melt the coconut oil until just barely liquid.

2.      Remove from heat and add essential oils.

3.      Pour into silicon candy molds and put in the fridge or freezer to harden.

4.      When done, remove from molds and store in a jar.

Use one per day or as needed, to use for your oil pulling needs.












Sun, Sunscreen, and Cancer

Do you Avoid the Sun or Love the Sun?


As the weather gets nicer and we start to enjoy the outdoors more, do you tend to AVOID the sun or LOVE (and respect) the sun? A 2014 study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine followed almost 30,000 women over the course of 20 years and the conclusion of the study: Avoiding sun exposure is a risk for all-cause mortality. Not only is avoiding sun exposure a risk, the major finding of the study was - women who avoided sun exposure were 2x more likely to die early than those who sunbathed regularly.1



This goes against everything we hear through media and marketing! Sunlight causes cancer right?


Most people who avoid the sun do so to avoid the risk of melanoma, or skin cancer, a legitimate fear in the minds of most Americans. What they fail to realize is that by avoiding the sun they are actually increasing their risk. In fact, even the link between sun exposure and melanoma is debated in the actual science.


“The link between melanoma and sun exposure is unproven. There’s no conclusive evidence that sunburns lead to cancer. There is no real proof that sunscreens protect against melanoma. There’s no proof that increased exposure to the sun increases the risk of melanoma.”

–Dr. Bernard Ackerman M.D., one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of sun, sunscreen, and skin cancer.


This is in part due to the incredibly important sun exposure causes the body to produce the hormone called Vitamin D3, which actually helps prevent against many diseases including cancer, diabetes, and degenerative diseases. Sunscreen blocks UV ray absorption, which causes the body to produce less Vitamin D3, effectively blocking cancer fighting. In today’s culture, it’s estimated that 80%+ are deficient in Vitamin D3.


In fact, a 2000 Swedish study looked at melanoma rates with people who used sunscreen more or less often. What they found was that not only did sunscreen not decrease the rate of melanoma, it actually increased the rate of melanoma in people who used it more often!2


I’m not suggesting you need to turn into a bronzed statue. I’m not suggesting you deliberately spend lots of time fully exposed to the mid-day sunlight. I’m definitely not suggesting you get any sunburned skin. I’m only suggesting that you challenge the status quo and think differently about sunlight and conventional sunscreen use (which is full of toxic ingredients). Here are a couple real-life suggestions to protect yourself while at the same time exposing yourself to a safe amount of sunlight regularly:  


First- cover yourself up, and cover your kids up. Lightweight long-sleeve tops work great as a sun-cover without being too hot. Our ancestors (not very long ago) would wear long sleeve shirts and pants all year long and still get plenty of sun exposure just from being outside. Hats are easy, sunglasses are easy too. Even if you forget these things you can always pick them up at a gas station and it’s probably better than picking up gas station sunscreen brands. Baby swimsuits are really cute, but put a shirt and pants on the kids after too long. Our girls have bucket hats and lightweight cover-alls, and sometimes they wear long-sleeve rashguard-type swimsuit tops to cover their arms.


Second- If you are going to the pool or the beach or the waterpark, find a high-quality, non-toxic sunscreen that you like. There are many homemade DIY recipes that you can make, but if you don’t want to make your own you can check for their Sunscreen Guide and find a brand that you trust. We personally use a sunscreen from Pure Haven Essentials.


Third- Take smaller doses of sunlight more often. Spending a few minutes a day is much better for your vitamin D3 production. Think about it like the Vitamin D3 that you might take as a supplement. You don’t necessarily want to take a ton at once. It’s designed to be taken on a regular basis in small doses (I recommend 5,000 IU even in the summer unless you are exposed to the sun very often). Go out for 45-60 minutes in the morning or evening, or 30 minutes in the mid-day sun and maybe just let your face, neck, and arms be exposed to the sun. Like exercise, chiropractic, supplements, etc...a little bit on a regular basis goes a really long way.

Zombie Apocalypse!


I never really understood why zombies (and everything to do with zombies) have gotten so incredibly popular, until recently. If you aren’t aware of it, today there are zombie TV shows, zombie movies, zombie 5k runs, even a haunted hayride where you can shoot live zombies with paintball guns. This isn’t just Halloween week, this is all year long!


Look around you and ask yourself - are we all becoming zombies? Are you one??


Today men are stressed to the max, living on caffeine and junk food, not getting enough sleep, working too much and then still thinking about work when they aren’t working. They are counting the days until retirement, but along the way there they’re destroying their health and the potential to actually enjoy their retirement and latter years. Everybody misses “the good old days” but has no idea how to get back to the energy and fun and fitness they used to have, and they think it’s just part of aging. Days become years, years become decades, cheeseburgers become belt notches, Tylenols become Zofrans and Trazadones, heartburn becomes a heart attack.




Women see marketing and advertising that if they just eat this food or use this product or take this pill that their life situation will improve – their wrinkles will disappear, weight will be lost, happiness will be had.  Sadly, the more likely reality is that their diet and stress and toxic personal care products will contribute to hormone disruption which will contribute to fatigue, brain fog, weight gain and more serious symptoms, often autoimmune. All they want is to slow down the aging process, but in reality everything they are doing is speeding it up. They medicate themselves out of depression, medicate themselves out of pain, medicate themselves out of stress, and eventually out of happiness.




Where does our zombification start? From the beginning! Kids sit in front of the TV, or the Nintendo DS, or the iPhone, or the tablet, or the computer, or the X Box… and become zombies. They eat GMO food loaded with sugars, additives, and colorings, all of which cause hyperactivity, then they get medicated with psychotropic drugs to “control” their behavior. They have the freedom and the imagination to run and play outside but they choose to stare at devices instead.




So maybe the zombie craze really is a reflection of what is happening in the world today, and maybe it is getting worse out there, but there’s always hope. It doesn’t have to be you or your family. Live life. Be happy. Be healthy. Get outside. Get your kids outside. Put down the electronics. Take care of your spine. Eat real food. Detoxify your life!

Essential Oils - Melaleuca

The leaves of the melaleuca tree have been used for centuries by the aborigines to heal cuts, wounds and skin infections. Melaleuca oil (Melaleuca alternifolia, or more commonly known as tea tree) has been used for centuries by cultures around the world to soothe. The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of certain myrtle shrubs and trees, and said to be 12x the purifying strength of phenol. It's a really great oil for immune support and cleaning. 

Melaleuca is known for its cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, promotes healthy immune function and protects against environmental and seasonal threats.  Yep great to mix with Lavender and Lemon for allergies.

Some common uses for Melaleuca are: acne, antiseptic, athlete’s foot, boils, bronchitis, burns, Candida, cold sores, colds, decongestant, diarrhea, flu, gum disease, immune stimulant, decrease inflammation, infections (bacterial, fungal & viral), insecticide, mites, parasites, rash, shock, skin health & cuts, sunburn, tonsillitis, ticks, tissue regenerator, warts and wounds

·       This is a powerhouse mix:  Mix equal parts Melaleuca & Lavender.  Can apply without diluting or add to an empty spray bottle, add water, shake before spraying on.  This mix is great for pink eye, ear infections, Owie spray for kid’s scrapes and burns.  Never apply an oil directly into an eye or ear.  To apply for ear infection get some on your finger and rub around where ear meets head.  For pink eye rub on the bone around the eye.

Becoming One of the Biggest Health Problems of Our Time

Fact:  Magnesium once the eighth most abundant mineral found in the earth, third most abundant mineral in sea water, and the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body.

Many individuals have been dealing with health issues associated with magnesium deficiency, but have no clue that being deficient in a single mineral, could be the leading cause of what ails them. That simply by supplementing with magnesium in multiple ways, could bring them complete relief from the horrible symptoms they have endured for so many years.

Long ago, soil and water were man’s most predominant source of magnesium. Presently our soil and water have been completely stripped away of this vitally important mineral. Unfortunately, most modern farming practices tax the soil, depleting it of its natural magnesium. In addition, most farmers are using fertilizers that are completely void of magnesium and replacing it with a compound of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, which do nothing to restore the magnesium levels. Not to mention, the over whelming amounts of petro-chemicals like the active ingredient in Roundup (Glyphosates) that have been dumped into our soil, and reaping havoc in our bodies. This has created food that is completely deplete of any nutrients particularly, magnesium. Another issue, is our water supply has been utterly devoid of magnesium, since they began poisoning our drinking water with fluoride. Fluoride, which is a neurotoxin, will bind together with the magnesium, creating a nearly insoluble mineral compound that ends up deposited in the bones, where its brittleness increases the risk of fractures. Rendering the magnesium absolutely unrecognizable and useless to the body. Not to mention, the plethora of other toxic chemicals being added to the soil and water, contributing and increasing the numerous symptoms many are already experiencing. “You may ask yourself, why in heavens name would anybody be doing this?” In my opinion, I believe it’s all very calculated and all being done intentionally, with a specific agenda in mind! Additional Reasons for Magnesium Deficiency and Depletion:

·       Consuming less than three servings of vegetables per day

·       Consuming foods from depleted and contaminated soils

·       Excess alcohol, sugar, caffeine, and processed food consumption

·       A diet high in foods with phytic acid (un-sprouted and un-soaked grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds)

·       Taking prescription medications like antibiotics and diuretics

·       Poor digestive absorption and assimilation due to leaky gut

·       Extreme exercise or anything that would induce excessive sweating

These are the physicians that have been discovering the link, and understanding the direct correlation between magnesium deficiency and the numerous symptoms that countless individuals have been suffering.

Magnesium Deficiency Triggers or Causes the Following Conditions:

1.     Anxiety and Panic attacks- Magnesium (Mg) normally keeps adrenal stress hormones under control.

2.     Asthma- Both histamine production and bronchial spasms increase with Mg deficiency.

3.     Blood clots- Mg has an important role to play in preventing blood clots and keeping the blood thin-much like aspirin but without the side effects.

4.     Bowel disease- Mg deficiency slows down the bowel causing constipation, which could lead to toxicity and malabsorption of nutrients, as well as colitis.

5.     Cystitis- Bladder spasms are worsened by Mg deficiency.

6.     Depression-Serotonin, which elevates moods, is dependent on Mg. A Mg-deficient brain is also more susceptible to allergens, foreign substances that can cause symptoms similar to mental illness.

7.     Detoxification- Mg is crucial for the removal of toxic substances and heavy metals such as aluminum and lead.

8.     Diabetes- Mg enhances insulin secretion, facilitating sugar metabolism. Without Mg insulin is not able to transfer glucose into cells. Glucose and insulin build up in the blood causing various types of tissue damage.

9.     Fatigue- Mg-deficient patients commonly experience fatigue because dozens of enzyme systems are under-functioning. An early symptom of Mg deficiency is frequently fatigue.

10.  Heart disease- Mg deficiency is common in people with heart disease. Mg is administered in hospitals for acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrhythmia. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle requires Mg. Mg is also used to treat angina, or chest pain.

11.  Hypertension- With insufficient Mg, spasm of blood vessels and high cholesterol occur, both of which lead to blood pressure problems.

12.  Hypoglycemia- Mg keeps insulin under control; without Mg episodes of low blood sugar can result.

13.  Insomnia- Sleep-regulating melatonin production is disturbed without sufficient Mg.

14.  Kidney Disease- Mg deficiency contributes to atherosclerotic kidney failure. Mg deficiency creates abnormal lipid levels and worsening blood sugar control in kidney transplant patients.

15.  Liver Disease leading to liver failure- Mg deficiency commonly occurs during liver transplantation.

16.  Migraine- Serotonin balance is Mg-dependent. Deficiency of serotonin can result in migraine headaches and depression.

17.  Musculoskeletal conditions- Fibrositis, fibromyalgia, muscle spasms, eye twitches, cramps and chronic neck and back pain may be caused by Mg deficiency and can be relieved with Mg supplements.

18.  Nerve problems- Mg alleviates peripheral nerve disturbances throughout the whole body, such as migraines, muscle contractions, gastrointestinal spasms, and calf, foot and toe cramps. It is also used in treating central nervous symptoms of vertigo and confusion.

19.  Obstetrics and Gynecology- Mg prevents Premenstrual Syndrome; prevents dysmenorrhea (cramping pain during menses); is important in the treatment of infertility; and alleviates premature contractions, preeclampsia, and eclampsia in pregnancy. 20.  Osteoporosis- Use of calcium with Vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption without a balancing amount of Mg causes further Mg deficiency, which triggers a cascade of events leading to bone loss.

21.  Raynaud’s Syndrome- Mg helps relax the spastic blood vessels that cause pain and numbness of the fingers.

3 of the Easiest Ways to Begin Increasing Your Magnesium Levels:


·       Consuming more organically grown chlorophyll dense whole foods; such as plenty of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard.

·       Consuming other whole magnesium rich foods- avocados, figs, soaked raw almonds and pumpkin seeds, raw or organic homemade kefir or yogurt (made from raw cow or goats milk), organic soaked black beans, raw cacao (in the form of powder, nibs, raw cacao chocolate 70% or higher is best and of course organic if possible), bananas, and wild caught salmon (not farm raised).

·       If you think you may be more severely magnesium deficient and want to improve your levels more quickly, you may consider taking a magnesium supplement.

For supplementation, the most bio- available sources would be either a liquid magnesium chloride or magnesium chelate.

Tip: If you decide to take a powdered magnesium supplement in the form of a capsule or tablet. Dr. Carolyn Dean MD, ND, best known as “the Magnesium Queen” from her Amazing book “Magnesium Miracle” suggests the best way to determine the amount of magnesium needed for each individual; is to begin taking the recommended dose then increasing that by a pill a day until you get really loose BM’s then decrease by one. So basically, whenever you experience some loose stools going down, continue to decrease by one.  That would be the most accurate way of determining the precise amount of magnesium needed…. Isn’t that an Awesome tip? I thought so when I heard her share that!

·       Last, but certainly not the least of the options I listed. Actually, I saved the best for last magnesium chloride oil used topically on the skin can lead to a faster level of absorption. When used on a consistent basis magnesium oil whether rubbed on feet before bed, applied to various areas on the body, or used in a relaxing foot soak bath are absolutely amazing ways for improving symptoms of insomnia, headaches, migraines, twitching of eyes or body, muscle cramping, restless leg syndrome etc.…
